A summary of issues involved in attending medical conferences, or other professional conferences, on Shabbos. May one study medicine and other fields on Shabbos? May one immerse himself in a non-Shabbos atmosphere? How should one fulfill mitzvos - Shabbos candles, Havdalah candle, minyan, Torah reading? How should one avoid violating Shabbos at sessions and in use of the hotel? After delivering this shiur I had the opportunity to convey a related question to Rav Herschel Schachter, and as part of the reply he ruled like the Rambam rather than the Rashba, prohibiting medical studies on Shabbat altogether.
